What to Expect

All consultations are by appointment only. You may expect that your inquiry, or appointment scheduling, will be handled in a caring and professional manner.

When you call you will be asked for some demographic information over the telephone. You will then be given an appointment.

Our staff will call you 24 hours in advance of your appointment, to remind you of your appointment date and time.

It is our policy to charge for appointments missed without 24 hours notice, unless extenuating circumstances exist, for example illness, injury, or a death in the family.

On the date of your first appointment, you should plan to arrive at our office 30 minutes early, so that you may fill out some introductory paperwork.

Your appointment will take place on time, and you will be seen and evaluated by Dr. Shifreen personally, not a physician extender such as a Physician’s Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.

Your first appointment will consist primarily of a History and Physical Examination. At the end of your Physical Examination, Dr. Shifreen will consult with you, describe in detail what he has found, and present you with a treatment plan. Dr. Shifreen may also recommend further diagnostic testing such as blood studies or x-rays. If required, prescriptions for medications will be provided.

Payment for services rendered is due at the time those services are rendered. We accept cash or credit card only. On occasion, we will accept a personal check from an established patient.

Dr. Shifreen does accept patients who have been injured in an accident, including motor vehicle accidents or a work-related accidents. In that case, if a patient wishes to defer payment, this can be arranged only if a patient has approved attorney representation.

Regarding insurance, Dr. Shifreen does not participate in any insurance plans. Specifically, Dr. Shifreen no longer participates with Medicare, Medicaid, or Blue Cross. However, many insurance plans do allow for “Out of Plan Benefits”. If your insurance company allows for “Out of Plan Benefits”, then it is recommended that you contact your insurance company in advance of your first appointment, and obtain written authorization for treatment through your “Out of Plan Benefits”. You will still be required to pay for services at the time those services are rendered, however, Dr. Shifreen will be happy to provide any needed documentation or bill your insurance company for you, with benefits going directly to you.

Dr. Shifreen will be available by telephone 24 hours per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year through our answering service. Dr. Shifreen will personally return all telephone calls regarding medical matters. Our staff will return all calls regarding administrative matters, such as making appointments, canceling appointments, routine prescription refills, and billing or insurance inquiries. Infrequently, Dr. Shifreen will be out of the country, in which case, Dr. Shifreen will return you call within 24 hours. If a medical emergency arises during a time when Dr. Shifreen is not available, patients will be instructed to call 911, or report to the nearest emergency room or walk-in medical center.

If you have any questions which are not covered in the above paragraphs, please do not hesitate to call our office for further information, or clarification of our policies.
